Media: mixed-media painting painting-and-books
As a musician/songwriter I started painting after failing to describe my synesthesia to friends. I see Music, Words and Speech etc., as colours and tones (not musical ones). I started painting in acrylics on big canvass, so friends could understand how I see and hear the music I write and play. The paintings usually traveled from very rigid tonal sequences to flowing and fluid abstractions. After the synesthesia work I then started painting large scale futuristic cityscapes, combining my love of modern architecture and my irrational fear of heights. I’m still working and developing these ideas for future projects. After doodling in glossy magazines on a transatlantic flight. I started thinking about taking the magazines and creating something new from them. I find things that interest me, i.e. colours, tones, shapes and draw over them. I then cut the drawings out of the magazines and start to build the pictures up. At the moment I’m still working on the futuristic cityscape and minimal pop art still life. These pictures are small scale, but I have sketches made for much bigger works in the future. This is just the start of the exploration of ‘Cut up Art’ for me.
